Forgotten History: Double Crowning in Miss AlabamaBirmingham Pageant

A Tale of Two Queens

In the annals of beauty pageantry, the Miss AlabamaBirmingham contest holds a unique and enigmatic distinction.

In 1936, 1946, and 1948, the pageant crowned two winners instead of one, leaving an enduring legacy of intrigue and unanswered questions.

The first double crowning occurred in 1936, when both Jean Simmons and Mary Jane Morrow were declared co-winners. Seven years later, Helen Martin and Mary Ellen Marks shared the title in 1946. And again in 1948, Betty Lou Redd and Marilyn Ann Berthia took home the coveted crown together.
