Wells Slugs Two Homers to Power Yankees Past Cardinals

Another multi-homer game for Luke Wells

Wells first Yankee with two multi-homer games in a season since Judge in 2017

NEW YORK -- Luke Wells' amazing rookie season continued Wednesday night, as he hit two home runs to power the New York Yankees to a 6-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

Wells' first homer was a solo shot off Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas in the second inning. His second was a two-run blast off reliever Giovanny Gallegos in the sixth. The home runs were part of a 4-for-4 night for Wells, who also scored three runs.

The Yankees needed every bit of Wells' production on Wednesday, as they struggled to generate offense against Mikolas and the Cardinals' bullpen. New York was held to just five hits in the game, and only one of those came after the third inning.

But Wells' heroics were enough to give the Yankees the win. The victory improved New York's record to 45-39, moving them above .500 for the first time since May 23.

Wells continues to impress

Wells has been one of the most impressive rookies in baseball this season. The 24-year-old is batting .329 with 20 home runs and 55 RBIs. He is also second in the American League in OPS (1.042) and WAR (4.3).

Wells' success has been a major factor in the Yankees' turnaround this season. After starting the season 15-20, the Yankees have gone 30-19 and are now in contention for a playoff spot.

Yankees win series against Cardinals

The Yankees' victory over the Cardinals clinched a series win for New York. The win was also the Yankees' fourth in a row, and it moved them to within two games of the second wild-card spot in the American League.

The Yankees will continue their homestand on Friday night when they host the Toronto Blue Jays. The Cardinals will travel to Miami to face the Marlins.
