Boars Head Products Recalled Due To Deadly Listeria Outbreak

Boars Head Expands Deli Meat Recall to 7 Million Pounds

Additional Products Included Amid Listeria Outbreak

WASHINGTON, July 30, 2024

Boars Head Provisions Co. Inc. is expanding its recall of deli meat after two deaths and around three dozen illnesses linked to the products. The company is now recalling an additional 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat products made at its Virginia plant.

The recall includes Boars Head Virginia Ham, which was previously not included in the initial recall issued on July 26, 2024. The products were distributed to retailers and food service establishments nationwide.

The recall is being conducted due to concerns about possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of Listeria infection include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators for any recalled products and discard them immediately. They should also contact their healthcare provider if they have consumed any of the recalled products and are experiencing any symptoms.

The company is cooperating with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) in the investigation of the outbreak. FSIS is advising consumers to follow these steps to prevent Listeria infection:

  • Clean your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling food.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating them.
  • Cook meat to its proper internal temperature.
  • Avoid unpasteurized milk and soft cheeses.
  • Discard any food that has mold or smells sour.
