Boars Head Recalls 7 Million Pounds of Meat and Poultry Products
Outbreak Linked to Listeria
Boars Head Provisions Co Inc. has recalled approximately 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products for possible listeria contamination. The recall includes a variety of products, including beef bologna and ham.
Deadly Outbreak
The recall comes after two people in the United States died and 28 people were hospitalized across 12 states from a listeria outbreak linked to sliced deli meat. The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is investigating the outbreak and has advised consumers to avoid eating the recalled products.
Symptoms of listeria infection can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, listeria can cause meningitis or bloodstream infections. Pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at increased risk for listeria infection.
Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. The FSIS also recommends that consumers clean and disinfect any surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled products.
